Basic Parameters of Die Casting Process

Pressure Parameters
Pressure is an essential factor in making the die-casting parts dense and clear. It is provided by the die-casting machine, and its size depends on the structure and power of the die-casting machine. There are two types of pressure representation: injection force and injection pressure.

Speed Parameters
There are two forms of speed in die casting: injection speed and filling speed. The injection speed refers to the moving speed of the injection punch, and the filling speed refers to the linear speed of the molten metal flowing through the runner in the mold.

Time Parameter
The die-casting time includes the filling time, the holding time, and the time that the die-casting part stays in the die-casting mold. It is the combined effect of pressure, velocity, temperature, molten metal properties, casting structure (mainly wall thickness and volume), and mold structure (especially gating and overflow systems).

Temperature Parameters
The pouring temperature of the molten metal and the working temperature of the mold are the thermal factors in the die casting process. They are one of the primary process parameters for obtaining qualified castings.

Benefits of Die Casting Process

Complex shapes

Die casting is a process that can produce complex shapes with tight tolerances.

01

Versatility

The process is versatile and can be used to cast a variety of metals, including aluminium, zinc, and magnesium.

02

High production rate

It is a relatively fast process, which can be an advantage when time is of the essence.

03

Cost-efficient

The process is also relatively inexpensive, making it a cost-effective option for many applications.

04

Repeatability

It also allows for a high degree of repeatability, meaning that parts can be manufactured to precise specifications.

Applications of Die Casting Process
精密压铸

Appliances

Die casting process creates extremely precise components, which is ideal for small, compact configurations of moving parts.

压铸件加工

Consumer and industrial products

Die casting process is suitable for making consumer products such as sink faucets, compressor pistons, connector rods, heat sinks, etc.

精密压铸加工

Automotive products

Die casting process is used in making gear, cylinders, small engines, gladhands, transfer cases and more specific parts applicable in the automotive industry.

Aerospace parts

Die casting process is a cost-effective solution to produce light but superior metal components that meet high-quality standards of the aerospace industry.

Die Casting Process Steps

Melting: The metal alloy is liquidated in a furnace. The temperature must be regulated accurately for optimum flowability.

Injection: Once melted, the molten metal is injected under high pressure into a pre-made die (mold) using an injection mechanism.

Cooling and Solidification

Following injection, the molten metal cools and solidifies within the die in seconds or minutes, depending on the size and complexity of the part.

Ejection

After getting cooled off, dies are opened while ejection pins force out completely done with casting.

Finishing Processes

Once ejected, other finishing operations, such as trimming, machining, or surface treatment, may be carried out to ensure that they meet precise specifications and improve their surface quality.

FAQ

Q: How long does the die casting process take?

A: The die casting cycle time depends on the weight of the components. While typically a very quick process, die casting can take from a few seconds for small components to a few minutes for large, heavier components. The quick cycle times allows you to complete high production runs as efficiently as possible.

Q: What is the best aluminum for die casting process?

A: Alloy A380 (ANSI/AA A380. 0) is by far the most widely cast of the aluminum die casting alloys, offering the best combination of material properties and ease of production. It may be specified for most product applications.

Q: What is the principle of die casting process?

A: With the movement of plunger in the shot sleeve, the molten metal is pushed into the cavity to fill all the space of the cavity, which is the designed 3D space in between the two halves of the die.

Q: What metal is best for die casting process?

A: The most commonly used metals in the process are zinc, aluminum, and magnesium. While several other options like copper, lead, brass, and tin exist, they are less common and are used only for specific projects.

Q: What is the pressure for die casting process?

A: The dies are then closed and molten metal is injected into the dies under high pressure; between 10 and 175 megapascals (1,500 and 25,400 psi). Once the mould cavity is filled, the pressure is maintained until the casting solidifies.

Q: What is the minimum radius for die casting process?

A: Even with the smallest fillets, castings can gain appreciable strength and reduced tension. At the minimum, a radius of 0.4mm is recommended in place of sharp edges. Radii can be larger where permitted but can be limited to 0.8mm if they are to be inconspicuous.

Q: What is the cold flow in die casting process?

A: Flow marks manifest as visible lines or streaks on the casting surface due to the flow of molten metal during mold filling. They can be caused by flaws in part geometry and inadequate gating and runner design.

Q: What is die casting process basic knowledge?

A: Die casting process is a metal casting process that involves feeding molten nonferrous alloys into dies under high pressure and at high speed to rapidly create molded products.

Q: What is the draft angle in die casting process?

A: Draft angles are the degree of taper that is incorporated into the side wall and cores of the die cast tool to aid in the removal of a part. Primarily, they function to reduce the friction between the part and the tool as it is ejected. Without draft angles, parts can be stripped, dented, or get stuck in the tool.

Q: Why is die casting process better than sand casting?

A: For producing complex, small-to-medium-sized parts with high dimensional accuracy and a smooth surface finish, die casting process is a clear winner. If a fast turnaround, a restrictive budget, or very large-sized parts define your project, then sand casting could be more suitable.
